Enjoy the Tradition of Thanksgiving in Sun Valley
One of the things that makes America so great is that we really know how to celebrate holidays. We love to revel and rouse during Christmas and Valentines Day, Arbor Day, Donut Day, Halloween, and the Super Bowl. But it’s pretty easy to argue that the best holiday of the year is the most truly American one of them all, Thanksgiving.
In case you didn’t realize “Turkey Day” was our nation’s best holiday, well then you obviously haven’t been reading enough obscure websites and blogs that say it is. You also obviously haven’t celebrated one in America’s original ski resort of Sun Valley.
Thanksgiving has long been the traditional opening day for the ski season in Sun Valley—and no matter how much snow there is to start the season, parties don’t get much more enjoyable than that.
There’s nothing quite like the first day of ski season. There’s a buzz and excitement in the air most of us haven’t experienced since the beginning of another year in elementary school, except instead of getting handed homework at the end of the day, we get to grab a hot chocolate or a hoppy beverage and hit the hot tub! And here in Sun Valley we also get top the day with the popular and tasty tradition of the Thanksgiving Buffet.
“It’s definitely a big tradition for a lot of people. Something they look forward to,” said Joey Armeen, the director of catering for Sun Valley Resort. “We get lots of local families who come back year after year, as well of quite a few hotel guests taking advantage of the opening weekend deals.”
Held in the historic Limelight Room at the Sun Valley Inn, there is a festive and familial feel to the feast. Thanksgiving Buffet works great for groups, or even just for couples or singles looking for a more social experience. The four-hour long buffet usually feds around 800 hungry souls. The doors open at 4pm and there’s often a line of hungry folks, still buzzing after their day skiing, snowboarding, or even fly fishing or walking/running in the annual Turkey Trot down in Hailey, happy to start the chow down.
“A lot of people will ski during the day, then spend a little time après skiing before they come over dinner. It’s a great atmosphere,” Joey said.
The Thanksgiving Buffet offers also all the traditional holiday fare like turkey and cranberries, mashed and sweet potatoes, and desserts of all kinds. They also offer a fairly large variety of non-traditional items popular in the mountains of Idaho like lamb and duck.
As Joey reminded, the friendly staff at Sun Valley is there to help with any allergy requests. They also do all the cooking and cleaning and tax and gratitude is already included in the ticket price. So all you have to do is eat, drink, eat some more, then maybe take a short break, have some dessert, and be merry.
“We do everything we can to assure that everyone has a great experience and a great meal,” Joey said.
If you didn’t already think Thanksgiving is the best holiday of the year then there’s no doubt that spending one in Sun Valley will convince you otherwise.
