The Spa Experience

I literally counted down the days until my appointment for a Hydra Facial at the brand new, wonderfully welcoming and unapologetically elegant Spa at Sun Valley. I practically skipped into the soaring granite lobby after the friendly doorman welcomed me to the fabulous new facility. Having toured the Spa on opening night of the renovated Sun Valley Lodge, I couldn’t wait to spend some quality time in one of the 15 treatment rooms, the luxurious lounges and even the pool and fitness center.

Welcome to the new Spa at Sun Valley! You may never want to leave

But first things first. Spa Director Tiffany Cameron had told me about the Hydra Facial a few weeks ago and it sounded like the perfect antidote to the damage that can be caused by living in our dry climate – not to mention good old fashioned aging. A medical grade device, the Spa’s Hydra Facial system is one of only two in Idaho and the only one not located in a doctor’s office. It offers a technique called hydradermabrasion that is gentler on the skin than standard dermabrasion and completely cleans, hydrates and plumps the skin through a series of four steps. Lest it all sound too clinical, though, the Hydra Facial is a spa treatment and along with the state-of-the-art skin technology comes a good dose of pampering.

I was met in the lobby by Angelica, my wonderful aesthetician, who recently relocated to Sun Valley from northern California. There, her impressive resume included running a Jurlique signature spa and running a doctor’s practice.  She escorted me to the ladies’ locker room where an attentive attendant showed me to a locker where an absolutely luxurious robe awaited. I helped myself to ice cold water flavored with a cornucopia of fresh fruit and settled into a comfortable chaise in the lounge. Shortly, Angelica returned and off we went to where the magic happens.

The Hydra Facial system instantly delivers smooth, hydrated skin and is great for all skin types. A good dose of pampering is part of the treatment, too

In the very spacious Treatment Room 9, I settled between the softest sheets I have encountered in a while on a warm, ergonomically correct bed. The lights were low. The décor peaceful and dominated by warm natural hues, rich textures and high ceilings. Relaxation was immediate.

Angelica briefly disrupted the calm by shining a bright line on my skin, offering a professional appraisal of its condition and what I could expect from the treatment. Her very professional demeanor and obvious depth of knowledge was reassuring and I was excited to see how she would proceed.

The procedure itself uses four different serums to prepare the skin and treat the skin. A special wand is used to apply and distribute the liquids. In truth, it is a little like having your skin “carpet cleaned” but it is not painful in any way: it is actually rather soothing. Both before and after the treatment, Angelica made sure there was some traditional spa pampering, too. Following the treatment, she offered a hand and arm massage as well as an amazing scalp massage using essential oils. Every tube, lotion and potion she opened smelled better than the next. The Spa uses products from the Naturopathica line that is all natural, nourishing and a perfect complement to the mountain lifestyle. All products are inspired by nature and draw from traditional healing practices.

Relax and put your feet up. If you book a service at the Spa at Sun Valley, you can stay and enjoy all the amenities including the lounge, pool and fitness center

My 50-minute service was over all too quickly, but I left the room feeling squeaky clean, hydrated and dewy. On Angelica’s recommendation, I spent the next seven minutes in the sauna, allowing the oils and products to continue to do their work.

The services menu at the Spa includes not only the Hydra Facial, but dozens of other wonderful facials, body treatments, massages and salon services. All are nourishing, hydrating, relaxing, rejuvenating and good for the body and soul. I am making a list of everything I want to try including: the signature White Cloud Massage with a choice of aromatherapy oils (‘Mediation’ sounds particularly nice), a Sun Stone massage, a Green Tea Herbal Wrap, a spa pedicure, and the Sun Valley Signature Facial with lots of add-ons!

What better way to enjoy a glorious summer day than by indulging in a pampering treatment and spending time poolside

With any treatment at the Spa at Sun Valley, guests are invited to come in early or stay after and use the wonderful new fitness center, the beautiful Lodge pool, or simply to rest and relax in the lounges. It is a decadent way to spend time.

It is so exciting to have this new 20,000-square-foot world-class facility in Sun Valley.  As I was checking out, I encountered a large bridal party getting beautiful for the big day, many local friends, and hotel guests. Everyone was all smiles and thrilled to be spending time at this gorgeous spa.

And, just for the record, my skin looked much better when I left and just continued to improve over the next few days. The brochure said the “the immediate results will leave you with a beautiful, glowing complexion,” and I can say the Hydra Facial lived up to its promise. Be sure to give it a try. You, too, will probably be hooked.
