Counting Down to Opening Day

It’s beginning to look a lot like ski season. Baldy’s slopes are clearly delineated in delightful winter white, the forecast this week looks wonderfully snowy (more than a foot of snow expected!), and anticipation fills the air. In just a week, at 9 a.m. on Thursday, November 23, the lifts at the base of River Run and Dollar will spring into action, carrying the lucky first skiers and boarders to the start of what is sure to be an amazing year.  This year, Sun Valley celebrates its 82nd season as America’s premiere destination ski resort and it just keeps getting better and better!

Lift lines are a rarity in Sun Valley but opening day they are part of the tradition as people happily queue up early for their first turns, this year on November 23.

Getting in line for one of the first chairs is a tradition for many. Groups of families and friends plan well ahead to try to secure one of the first chairs of the day. Since lift lines are a rarity in Sun Valley, many enjoy the camaraderie of queuing up with like-minded people to reconnect with our amazing mountain community.  Like so many things in Sun Valley, opening day is a big party and everyone is invited!

This photo, taken on an opening day past, is a good indication of the beauty, peace, and joy many find as they start off the season on River Run

Giving Idaho’s ever-changing weather and some expected pre-Thanksgiving storms, exactly what terrain will be open for opening day is still evolving.  On Bald Mountain, expect top-to-bottom terrain serviced by the gondola, River Run Express, and the Lookout Express. Certain runs on Dollar will open for Thanksgiving weekend and then plans are to open for the season December 9. Please check back to this blog or HERE for the most updated information.

There’s no question, though, that as November moves to December and deeper into the snowy winter, there will be terrain for every taste. Whether you love cruising Baldy’s amazing top-to-bottom groomers, playing in the big bumps, challenging yourself in the glades, practicing on gentle runs, or taking on rollers, rails, and jumps, the slopes of both Bald and Dollar Mountains have literally limitless ways to have fun in the snow.

Don’t forget, the early season is a terrific time to spend a few quality hours or days with one of Sun Valley’s professional and fun SnowSports instructors. Everyone feels rusty after the long off-season and working out the kinks with an instructor, or revisiting basics, is a great idea. Whether you choose a group class or private lessons, one of Sun Valley’s numerous programs is sure to be a great fit for you and your family. Please call 208-622-2289 or email snowsports@sunvalley.com to secure your spot (and even your Christmas plans – it’s definitely not too early) today.
