The excitement in town is palpable and the countdown to the Great American Eclipse has begun in earnest. Everyone is buzzing about the solar eclipse that will take place on the morning of August 21 with Sun Valley in the path of totality. The actual eclipse will be brief, but the party is going to go on for days. Sun Valley recently announced that while much of the action on eclipse day will take place on Bald Mountain, there will be plenty of fun to be had at the Sun Valley Village, as well. Beginning at 9 a.m. on the 21st, grab your space on the lawn of the Sun Valley...
If you love to challenge yourself on Sun Valley’s epic black diamond cross country skiing trails you won’t want to miss the Diamondback’s Revenge race on Saturday, February 27. The race action will headquarter at the Sun Valley Nordic Center and will include options for a 5k, 10k, 15k – classic or skate ski, snowshoe, or fat bike.
The Diamondback Loop is challenging and stunning. Come out on February 27 to take it on!
“This is a fun, local race for intermediate or advanced skiers,” said Ivana Radlova, Sun Valley Nordic and Snowshoe Center Director. “The race starts on the White Clouds Loop, across Trail Creek Road from the Nordic Center. From there it takes racers on the entire Diamondback Loop, an expert trail with absolutely stunning views.”
“This loop is more physically demanding than technical,” Ivana continued. She calls this “arguably the toughest race in the Valley” but emphasized that it will be a great way to spend a Saturday morning.
The race will offer one loop as a 5k or two loops as a 10k. Skiers will have a mass start to the race at 11 a.m.
If you prefer to snowshoe or even fat bike, then come out, too. These races will launch at noon. For snowshoers, the race will be one loop. Fat tire bike racers can choose one loop for novices or three loops for advanced riders.
The beautiful Sun Valley Nordic Center is HQ for the Diamondback Revenge and all things Nordic. Come out and ski, snowshoe, or fat bike and then stay for a delicious lunch
“This race is scheduled after the Boulder Mountain Tour and the Birkebeiner races, so athletes can keep the season going,” Ivana explained. “We invite everyone to come out to enjoy the early spring conditions in Nordic Town USA.”
After the race, be sure to stop into the Sun Valley Club at the Nordic Center to enjoy a well-deserved lunch. Choose from hearty salads, hot soups, hand-crafted sandwiches and entrees. Toast your success at the full bar and relax, enjoying your accomplishment.
Even if the Diamondback Loop may be a bit advanced for you, there are kilometers of trails at the scenic Sun Valley Nordic Center, appropriate to all abilities
The entry fee structure is as follows: $10 for 5km, $15 for 10km, $20 for 15 km. You can register at the Nordic Center, by calling 208-622-2250 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Day of race entries will be accepted until 10 a.m. Saturday morning for an additional $5 fee.
If you are interested in cross country but not quite ready for the Diamondback trail, be sure to book a lesson at the Nordic Center. There are private and group lessons available for every ability level. Please call 208-622-2250 to take advantage of the great conditions and this fantastic sport.
