Giddy Up, Let’s Go! It’s Sleigh Ride Season

Just hear those sleigh bells jingling
Ring-ting-tingling too
Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you
Outside the snow is falling
And friends are calling, "Yoo hoo"
Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you

It’s the stuff of winter legends; the fodder for perennially popular classic songs like “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson.  You bundle up, hop aboard an old-fashioned wooden sleigh, drawing slightly scratchy, warm blankets over your lap. As the horses exhale, their breath condenses in the crisp winter air. With a giddy-up from your cowboy hat clad driver, the runners creak, and you are off, coursing across the snow-laden field; running over the river and through the woods.

It’s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together in Sun Valley!

In Sun Valley, this legendary experience can be yours. Whether you take a scenic daytime sleigh ride tour, or use this novel method of transportation to access a very special dinner at Trail Creek Cabin, no winter visit to Sun Valley is complete without this experience.

Daytime sleigh rides are fun for the whole family and a wonderful way to see Sun Valley from an entirely new perspective. One-hour tours take riders through the Trail Creek Golf Course, past landmarks including the Hemingway Memorial and Trail Creek Cabin. The views of Dollar Mountain and Baldy are unbeatable. Tours depart and end at the Sun Valley Nordic Center, home to the Sun Valley Club – the perfect place to enjoy a delicious warm lunch before or after your special ride. Tours are available from December 17 to January 1 every half an hour between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. From January 2 to February 17, rides will be offered on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays every hour starting at 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Daily rides resume from February 18 through the 26, again on the half hour starting at 11 a.m. From February 27 to the end of the season, the schedule returns to Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on the hour.  The price for the tours is $20 for adults and $10 for children 18 and under. Children under 2 are free. Reservations are not required for parties of fewer than eight people. Please buy your tickets at the Sun Valley Nordic Center or call 208-622-2135. Please also note that wagons may be used in place of sleighs, depending on snow conditions.

A sleigh ride to enjoy dinner at historic Trail Creek Cabin is truly a magical winter experience

For the ultimate in romance or a family night you will never forget, a sleigh ride to Sun Valley’s historic Trail Creek Cabin for dinner tops the list. This experience, that includes a beautiful sleigh ride out to Trail Creek and back, plus a delicious, hearty dinner, is a favorite among visitors and locals alike. Bundle up and hop on to enjoy an approximately half hour ride that takes you by moonlight, starlight, or softly falling snow, along the banks of Trail Creek, through aspen copses, and to the rustic cabin with an incredible rich history. Originally built in 1937 as hunting lodge, this mountain-style log cabin is nestled perfectly in the trees right next to the rushing waters of Trail Creek. It is a perfect getaway without having to get away.  And Chef Shane Overby’s seasonal menu is simply superb. The whole family will enjoy regional specialties including Rocky Mountain Elk, Northwest Steelhead, Bison Short ribs, as well as more traditional fare.

Sleigh rides to Trail Creek Cabin are available Wednesdays through Sundays during the winter, with nightly options available during the Christmas holiday and President’s Week. Due to the popularity of this activity, reservations are required -- and should be made well in advance – by calling 208-622-2135. Peak season dates are December 15 to January 1 and February 8 to March 5. Weather permitting, sleighs/wagons will run mid-December through March 26. Pricing during peak season is $159 plus tax for adults and $95 plus tax for children. During the value season, pricing is $129 plus tax for adults and $75 plus tax for children. Pricing is all-inclusive for the sleigh/wagon ride, dinner and tip. There is no charge for infants under three years old. The experience is priceless!

Trail Creek Cabin is a very festive place to toast friends and family and to enjoy the season with special touches like live accordion music

For something truly special, private sleigh rides are also available. Book a private sleigh or wagon for weddings, engagements, anniversaries or any special occasion. For more information please call the Recreation Center at 208-622-2135 or email recreation@sunvalley.com.

Winter simply isn’t winter without including the joy of a sleigh ride in your plans. My family has celebrated the holidays, birthdays, special visitors, and “just because” with sleigh rides to Trail Creek Cabin. Each and every one has been special and conjures up memories of roaring fires, a serenade from the talented accordion player, delicious scones, and boundless starlit nights. Call today to book this magical experience.

The Presidents’ Weekend holiday is nearly upon us, and for many lucky families, the whole of Presidents’ week as well. In Sun Valley, this means non-stop activities for the whole family, from the slopes to sleigh rides.

Of course, most people come to Sun Valley for the weekend and for ski week to ski or ride and this season conditions simply couldn’t be better. Winter storm after winter storm blanketed Baldy and Dollar in deep snow, allowing people to explore
