Fall

The Year that Was

2016 was an exciting year in Sun Valley from the slopes to movie screenings; from world-class entertainment, to stars on ice. This winter, the resort celebrated its 80th birthday, and as the following selection of photos of the year that was illustrate, it’s just getting better and better! Enjoy, and Happy New Year!

The year started off with great snow, epic skiing and the return of the best in national ski racing to Baldy’s storied slopes. There was some pretty great action on Dollar’s Terrain Park, too. 2016 also welcomed many luminaries outside the snow sports world to town.

In February, Christy Turlington Burns spoke at the Family of Woman Film Festival to raise awareness about the importance of providing quality maternal healthcare to every woman around the globe

February also saw the return of the popular Boulder Mountain Tour, the culmination of the Sun Valley Nordic Festival (photo courtesy Nils Ribi)

On the alpine front, in March, Sun Valley hosted the U.S. Alpine Championships, welcoming incredible athletes to Warm Spring’s slopes

The action during Nationals was absolutely thrilling

At this year’s star-studded Sun Valley Film Festival, filmmaker Oliver Stone received the Lifetime Vision Award and captivated audiences

Spring sprang with one of the most beautiful lupine blooms in memory, great hiking and biking, and lots of reasons to visit Sun Valley.

Over Memorial Day weekend, the
Sun Valley Wellness Festival offered inspiring speakers, classes, and workshops. The highly anticipated keynote speaker was singer-songwriter Jewel.

The one-and-only
MC YOGI was another headliner at the Sun Valley Wellness Festival. Attendees will never think about yoga in the same way again!

The spring brought an abundance of wildflowers to the delight of early season hikers and bikers

Summer in Sun Valley was a star-studded affair with top singers, bands, figure skaters, and the Sun Valley Summer Symphony bringing world-class culture and entertainment to the valley.

The incomparable Emmylou Harris delighted the audience at River Run as a part of the
Sun Valley Center for the Arts Summer Concert Series

The world’s best figure skaters, including Jason Brown (pictured), Ashley Wagner, Gracie Gold, and Meryl Davis and Charlie White performed beneath the stars throughout the summer, making Sun Valley the
hottest show on ice.

The crowd at the Sun Valley Pavilion was on its feet when Foreigner took to the stage

The
Sun Valley Summer Symphony kicked off an amazing season that drew thousands of appreciative fans with an electrifying rendition of Stravinsky’s Firebird featuring full-scale puppets, dancers, and live music.

Autumn was an extended Indian summer this year, with warm days lasting nearly to November. Everyone made the most of the perfect weather by getting outside as much as possible

Autumn showed off its glorious colors, providing hikers and bikers with a wonderful late season opportunities to enjoy this beautiful valley

Everyone’s favorite parade –
The Trailing of the Sheep Festival – returned to Ketchum’s Main Street in October celebrating the region’s rich history

As fall gave way to winter, Baldy opened on time at Thanksgiving and then Mother Nature brought in her own big guns and blessed Sun Valley with winter storm after winter storm throughout December. The
skiing and riding is fantastic!
