Walking in a Winter Wonderland

With fresh snow blanketing the valley and bright sunshine reflecting off of each crystal, a beautiful winter season has begun in Sun Valley.  Skiers and riders are enjoying the early season on Bald Mountain, shops are dressed in festive attire, and young and older eagerly anticipate the weeks to come.

Sun Valley’s Winter Wonderland kick-off party and celebration will help you get in the holiday spirit. This annual tradition promises to make the weekend of December 10 and 11 merry and bright with a family-friendly, old-fashioned celebration centered at the Sun Valley Village.

Bring the whole family to Sun Valley’s Winter Wonderland to enjoy an afternoon of old-fashioned fun and a visit from Santa himself.

The magic of the season comes alive on December 10 for the little ones with activities that delight. From 1 – 4 p.m., a village train is the perfect way to enjoy a ride, look at the beautiful holiday windows of Sun Valley’s upscale stores, and to create a perfect photo op for mom and dad. Children will also want to stop at the Boiler Room to indulge in some gingerbread/cookie decorating and face painting, all for $7 a child. Don’t miss a picture with Santa, too! A scavenger hunt throughout the resort’s shops, the Inn, and the Lodge will also begin on the 10th and run through January 2. Collect stamps as you follow clues. When you get them all, there is a surprise in store!

The little ones can enjoy tours around the Sun Valley Village in a delightful, colorful train

Just when you think this even can’t get any better, it does! This year, Sun Valley has added an Open Air Holiday Market on Saturday from 12 – 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Take a trip to a traditional European Christmas market without ever having to leave town. Stroll around the Duck Pond Lawn at the Sun Valley Village and delight in the wares of Santa’s unofficial elves while you enjoy spiced cider and delicious Linzer cookies. Local and regional vendors will tempt you and help you check off your gift list. These include the Because Project, selling beeswax and essential oil candles that come in recycled wine glasses (with proceeds going back to community organizations in this season of giving); handmade gifts and jewelry; handcrafted vanilla (plus delicious recipes); custom leather handbags fashioned completely of all-natural products; Sun Valley print tees, totes, towels, and gifts, wooden signs; fair trade jewelry and baskets (to benefit Project Lydia, an economic development project that lifts women out of the worst or poverty, restores purposes, hope and dignity); home goods; imported German Christmas gifts, and much more!

Local a cappella groups will sing in beautiful harmony at the Sun Valley Village this weekend

Take a break from the festivity by popping into the Konditorei tent by the duck pond to enjoy typical Austrian fare like bratwurst sandwiches on pretzel buns, hot spiced wine, cookies, Austrian beers, roasted nuts, and more. They will also be selling European-inspired baked goods and gifts. We dare you to ignore the smell of roasting brats and nuts from this pop-up eatery! A cappella singing groups will entertain with favorites arranged in beautiful ways throughout the afternoon. A fire pit will blaze to keep you warm and tables and chairs will be available to grant a respite from all the fun.

This special weekend is the opportune time to get your holiday shopping done in plenty of time to relax and simply enjoy the weeks to come. In addition to the open-air market, the shops at Sun Valley offer many gifting inspirations. Whether you are looking for something sweet from the Chocolate Foundry, Sun Valley logo gifts from Sun Valley Signatures & Gifts, jewelry to make an impression from Towne and Parke, a beautiful sweater from Panache, the finest ski fashions and accessories at Brass Ranch, unique and thoughtful home goods from Bellissimo, toys, toys, toys from the Toy Store, active wear from Pete Lane’s, or gifts from the Sun Valley Lodge Gift Shop, there truly is something for everyone! And then some.

Spend some time with your family decorating (and then eating!) cookies and gingerbread Saturday afternoon

On Saturday, enjoy free express gift wrapping at Sun Valley Signatures & Gifts from 1 – 6 p.m. Volunteers from the local chapter of Girls on the Run will make sure your gifts, purchased anywhere, will look perfect.  100 percent of donations benefit the local chapter of this very worthwhile organization.

If you are looking for an old-fashioned, family-friendly weekend, be sure not to miss the Winter Wonderland kick-off celebration and Open Air Holiday Market. The pace is leisurely; the memories will last forever.
