It’s Go Time for GoPro’s Out of the Box contest

At 4 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, the crowd at the base of Dollar Mountain was giddy with excitement. Dozens of members of the Freeride team, the Sun Valley Ski Education Freestyle and Snowboard teams, and other enthusiastic shredders gathered around the enormous black container emblazoned with camera giant GoPro’s logos. The container is part of GoPro’s “Out of the Box” campaign, what they call “a resort competition like no other.”

The premise of the “Out of the Box” competition challenges the four participating resorts, Sun Valley, Park City, Northstar and Bear Mountain, to use the raw materials hidden inside the container to build the most amazing terrain park features they can dream up. The container was delivered to Sun Valley a few weeks ago, but the contents remained a secret until this week. On Tuesday, representatives from the four resorts received the combination to unlock their containers and reveal what’s inside.

Whether you’re a recreational skier, snowboarder or a pro like Sun Valley’s Collin Collins, get stoked for GoPro’s “Out of the Box” terrain park and contest, coming soon to Dollar Mountain

When the combination lock snapped open and the doors to the container were pulled back, the crowd caught a first glimpse of the raw materials that will be turned into amazing features. Raw metal, bars, pipes, walls, rails and tubing will be transformed into a 200 x 200-foot terrain park on skier’s left on Dollar.

“Our creative terrain park engineers can’t wait to get their hands on these materials from GoPro,” said Mike Fitzpatrick, Sun Valley Marketing Manager. “There are even plans to incorporate the actual container in the build-out. It’s going to be epic.”

Charlie Price, an 11-year-old member of the Freestyle Comp home team, witnessed the unveiling. “I was really excited to be one of the first people to see what was in the box, and I am also excited to be able to use the equipment this winter," he enthused.

Charlie won’t have to wait long to ski these new features. “The plan is to build the park for the next month or so and have it ready for Christmas,” Fitzpatrick said. “Then, between the holidays and the official start to the contest on January 15, skiers and snowboarders can ride the features and provide feedback so we can make it the best setup possible. World-renowned freestyle athletes like Collin Collins, Yancy and Wyatt Caldwell, and Banks Gilbertti will also ride the GoPro park before the contest kicks off and once it is underway.

Excitement was high Tuesday afternoon when the doors to the GoPro container were thrown open, revealing the raw terrain park materials inside.

According to GoPro, “Out Of The Box is a season-long activation that challenges the staff at four resorts to utilize identical cargo containers filled with raw materials to create the most unique park set-up possible.” Whatever the team comes up with, it will be judged in three ways by GoPro and Snow Park Technologies between January 15 and March 13, 2016. The competition categories are: Best Overall Activation by Resort, Best Resort Edit and #gopropark Instagram contest. There are cash awards in each category. For the Instagram contest, a guest at each participating resort will win both $1,000 and a season pass for their winning entry that showcases the GoPro terrain features. This is a great incentive for everyone to get out there and document their experience. “It’s really important for people to do their own posting with their GoPro cameras once the contest starts,” according to Fitzpatrick. “There are great prizes and we know people will want to share what is sure to be an amazing time in Sun Valley.”

The container, stationed at the base of Dollar Mountain, was like a giant present waiting to be opened. On Tuesday, Sun Valley did just that, officially launching the quest to win the “Out of the Box” campaign.

It’s game on! Check back to this blog for updates on the GoPro build-out and be sure to start charging those GoPro cameras.  The season is nearly here!
