For the mountain community, February has been like Christmas Day over and over again. The gift? Snowstorm after snowstorm dumping the wonderful white stuff to the tune of more than 100 inches of snow this month – a record since records started being kept decades ago. And the month isn’t over yet.
There has been so much snow atop Baldy that the Ski Patrol shack is literally buried What is a gift to recreationists, though, provides some pretty enormous challenges to the team keeping our winter white playground functioning and safe under extreme conditions. The outstanding men and women...
So many elements go into making a memorable holiday: family and friends, traditions, skiing and riding, unique activities like sleigh rides and, of course, food. Meals are what bring together a group after exhilarating runs on Baldy or Dollar, an afternoon spent building a snowman. They are the perfect way to get a day started on the right note, or provide a much-needed respite during a busy day of shopping.
Lunch or dinner at the historic Roundhouse is a unique, memorable, and delicious Sun Valley experience. The view isn’t half bad either!
Very special holiday choices abound in Sun Valley, from casual fare to elegant multi-course dinners. One that you really shouldn’t miss is a meal at historic Roundhouse. This charming eatery, that opened in 1939, is nestled two-thirds of the way up Bald Mountain and offers, hands down, the best views in town. During the day, give your legs a break and join the friendly Roundhouse staff for a wonderful lunch. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Roundhouse offers favorites including specialty salads, inventive sandwiches, and the ever-popular fondue for two. If you have members in your party who don’t ski or ride, they can meet you for a delicious lunch around a roaring fire by taking a scenic ride up the River Run gondola. Averell’s Bar offers service daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., too – the perfect spot for après ski. For something really special, take the gondola up after-hours to enjoy dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, starting tonight, from 6 – 9 p.m. The dinner menu is sublime – six courses of delicate, surprising, and delicious taste combinations including pheasant, beef tenderloin, and Ahi. Please call 208-622-2012 for reservations and more information and prepare to be wowed.
The Ram in the Sun Valley Village is another unique setting to enjoy a memorable holiday meal. From cozy booths, to tables for ten, this rustic and lovely restaurant is bathed in candlelight and filled with the sounds of live piano music. And the food is as delectable as the setting. The Ram focuses on staples prepared with a modern twist. Starters include clam chowder with celery root, red potato, and crisp pancetta; Foie Gras; and Sun Valley’s famous fondue. Entrees range from the finest steaks to pork chops, chicken, and Sturgeon, all prepared with flair. My family dined at the The Ram last week and delighted in a truly delicious meal. We all thought the chicken, prepared with butternut squash risotto, and a pecan pan sauce was especially tasty. To make your holiday reservations at The Ram, please call 208-622-2225.
Sun Valley is justly famous for its fondue and you can linger over this tasty treat at both The Ram and Roundhouse restaurants
If you are still looking for the perfect place to enjoy Christmas Eve or Christmas Day meals, look no further than Gretchen’s at the Sun Valley Lodge and the Konditorei at the Sun Valley Village. Both are open for dinner on Christmas Eve. At the Konditorei, the chef is preparing an “Alps” theme meal with a choice or appetizers, entrees, and desserts, all with a flair that befits the surroundings. The Konditorei, a Bavarian inspired restaurant, is cozy – warmed by a huge fireplace and filled with merriment. At Gretchen’s, holiday meals will include those from the regular menu and a special holiday choice. Don’t forget that the Konditorei and Gretchen’s are also the place for delicious and satisfying breakfast and lunch dining – the perfect start to your day or a great place to take a break from your busy schedule. The Konditorei’s Sunday brunch is famous (don’t forget the make your own Bloody Mary option!) and breakfast at Gretchen’s focuses on farm fresh, handmade choices that use only the finest ingredients.
A truly one-of-a-kind way to enjoy this magical season is dinner at historic Trail Creek Cabin. Though the fare is absolutely delicious and the environs cozy and rustic, perhaps the best part about enjoying this experience is the experience of getting there. During the holidays, nightly sleigh rides whisk diners from Sun Valley Village, across snowy fields on an approximately 30-minute sleigh ride that concludes outside Trail Creek Cabin. After a fireside meal, bundle up, draw the blankets over your laps, and enjoy the return ride. Please call 208-622-2019 for reservations.

Don’t forget a casual meal at Bald Mountain Pizza, too. This home-style pizza and pasta place is the perfect spot for a family meal. Relax, sit back, bite into a slice of piping hot pizza or tuck into a pasta dish, and exchange stories about your day. They are open daily from 5 – 9 p.m. For a fun twist on a traditional meal, head to the Sun Valley Bowling Center, play a few games, and nosh on delicious food that will be delivered right to your lane. The varied menu includes everything from a Black Angus cheeseburger, to Baja shrimp tacos, and their famous Mac Tots.
For a quick warm-up that harkens back to another era, don’t forget to pop into a la mode at the Sun Valley Village for a custom-made hot chocolate. Variations including the “classic Sun Valley” prepared with dark and white chocolate cocoa, housemade marshmallows, and whipped cream or the “sea salt caramel” that combines dark chocolate cocoa, salted caramel sauce, and whipped cream. These treats will warm you inside and out.
