The holidays in Sun Valley are unique. From the snow-covered peaks (and ski runs!) that surround the Wood River Valley, to the old-fashioned charm of the Sun Valley Village and the decidedly European feel of the Resort, Christmas in Sun Valley is straight out of a beloved picture book. I have spent more than 30 Christmases in Sun Valley and while I certainly appreciate all that the Resort does to keep current (our amazing snowmaking and grooming, the gorgeous Lodge remodel, The Spa, and new

This Sunday, January 17, there is no better place to be in Sun Valley than Dollar Mountain. Come celebrate the season with the grand opening of the mountain’s amazing Superpipe, the GoPro terrain park, and food and drink specials.
“Our Parks guys, groomers, and the whole team have worked hard through the early winter and we are feeling really stoked about what we’ve accomplished by mid-January. There is great stuff up there,” said John Matteson, Dollar Mountain Manager. “The bonus is it’s a pretty quiet weekend so it’s a fantastic time for everyone who is here to really enjoy the mountain.”
Dollar is a great playground, whether you love to ride the rails and Superpipe, or just cruise the groomers. This weekend is the perfect time to get out and enjoy it all
Sun Valley’s epic 22-foot Superpipe is one of only a few in the nation. Though the pipe may look intimidating, especially when great local freestyle skiers and boarders are throwing amazing tricks in it, John said it isn’t as unapproachable as it looks. “If it looks like fun to you, you should try the Superpipe,” he said. “It isn’t nearly as scary as it seems. It’s an easy trip down the middle.”
This weekend, there will even be some freestyle legends around to help kick the Superpipe season into high gear. A photo session is planned with pro athletes Nate Sheehan, Barrett Cincotta, Colin Cummins, and Banks Gilberti. Come get inspired!
Both the Superpipe and GoPro terrain park will be open on Sunday. Come check them out!
The terrain park features are also fun for everyone this winter. In addition to the amazing rails, boxes, and jumps that are always available to play on, the GoPro Park provides added excitement. Part of the GoPro “Out of the Box” contest, the terrain park was specially designed by park pros using raw materials that the camera giant sent to Sun Valley. The huge container the materials arrived in has now become a tunnel on Dollar. Four resorts are competing for glory and prizes (individual and for the resort) during this contest that lasts through March 13. “The GoPro park turned out great,” John said, “We are really stoked about it. There are a bunch of new interesting rail features no one has seen before as well as that cool tunnel.” For more on the “Out of the Box” contest, please click HERE and make sure to go and check out the new features for yourself on Sunday.
All that skiing and boarding is sure to work up an appetite, and this weekend kicks off what is sure to be a tradition on Dollar for the rest of the season. John explains, “Sundays on Dollar have become very family-focused and we want to invite and encourage families to come and enjoy all the great conditions on Dollar as well as some great food and beverage specials at Carol’s Dollar Mountain Lodge. We will be selling beer at a discount ($5 pitchers) for adults and there will be family-friendly food to keep everyone energized and fired up.”
Pros, amateurs, and enthusiasts will all be on Dollar this weekend, enjoying a great mid-winter Sunday and everything the mountain offers
We are expecting new snow this weekend (it just keeps coming!) that will make great conditions even better. And with temperatures expected to reach a balmy 32 degrees on Sunday, it will be the perfect day to gather your whole family and lots of friends and chill for the afternoon at Dollar.
