Tickets are booked (or the car is packed), reservations secured, and you’re ready to see for yourself what a Sun Valley summer (a thing of legend) is really all about. You’ll want to make the most of your time in the Wood River Valley from the moment you arrive – there is so much to do and not a moment to waste – so we have prepared a three-day suggested itinerary as your guide. Please keep in mind...
This is a town of cross country skiers, enthusiasts who love to get out and enjoy the endless kilometers of trails that stretch up and down the valley. Sun Valley, in fact, was named Nordic Town USA. Though I have tried cross country and enjoyed the amazing exercise and incredibly beautiful scenery, it's been a while since I hit the trails.
Well, it's time for me to try again and if you have been thinking about learning to cross country ski, or even if you're a pro, join us this Sunday, January 10, for a free day on the Sun Valley trails. Come out to the spectacular Nordic Center, located just east of the Sun Valley Lodge and enjoy a free one-day pass in honor of the SnowSports Industries America (SIA) Winter Trails Day. Whether you are interested in classic or skate skiing, or do one and want to try the other, this is a terrific way to start the New Year off right. There are even options for fat biking and snowshoeing – but more on that in a minute.
Sun Valley isn't Nordic Town U.S.A. for nothing! Try this amazing sport on Sunday when trail passes at the Sun Valley Nordic Center are free
Sun Valley offers some of most picturesque trails imaginable for every level of expertise. They wind through aspen groves, along Trail Creek, and into the woods. With flats, hill climbs, and downhill terrain, you are sure to get a great workout and a wonderful day in the fresh winter air.
"We'd like to invite everybody to come out and experience our serene and beautifully groomed trails on Sunday," said Ivana Radlova, Nordic Director at Sun Valley. "Even if you've never been cross country skiing before, we're offering 30-minute mini lessons for first-timers. There is something for everyone."
Steve Haim, instructor extraordinaire at the Nordic Center added, "We encourage people to come enjoy the amazing conditions. It's as good as it gets right now and if you've never skied here or haven't been in a while, we are sure you will have a great time."
The gorgeous Sun Valley Nordic Center and Club is headquarters for all your cross country needs, from rentals, to trail advice, to a wonderful post-workout meal
All of the trails will be open starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday, with full and half-day equipment rentals available for both skiing and snowshoeing at the Center. The 30-minute introductory cross country ski lessons are free and take place at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.
Fat biking, one of the hottest trends in snow, will also be available to try on Sunday. Fat biking is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience winter on a bike designed to ride on snow. This sport is hugely popular in the Wood River Valley and if you're curious, give it a try this weekend. Dog Loop and Boundary Loop will be open for fat biking in Sun Valley. Bring a bike (Sun Valley does not rent them) and give it a try. If you love it, you may want to sign up for the second annual Snowball Special Fat Bike Race. Sun Valley will be hosting the event on January 30. Please click here for race registration and information.
Snowshoeing is also great exercise and requires very little equipment or instruction. It is an activity appropriate to almost any age and ability level and can be done right from the steps of the Nordic Center.
On Sunday, be sure to make a day of it, enjoying a wonderful lunch or a post-workout cocktail or snack at the Sun Valley Clubhouse. The dining room is warm and welcoming and the menu is filled with the freshest sandwiches, salads, soups, and entrees. Everything is always flavorful and delicious. Go ahead, you earned it!
Whether you are an absolute beginner or a seasoned pro, cross country is a sport everyone can enjoy. Come give it a try!
Sun Valley is Nordic Town U.S.A. and has the best Nordic skiing in the U.S. All things Nordic are celebrated annually at the Sun Valley Nordic Festival that takes place this year from January 29 through February 7. The week celebrates mountain and Nordic culture with races, recreational skiing, demos, social activities and events, and, of course, the Boulder Mountain Tour. Please check back to this blog for more on this fun-filled week.
