A Dozen Best Bets for Some Off the Slopes Fun

One of the great things about Sun Valley is that it's pretty darn easy to have a good time here during the chilly winter months, even if you don't like to downhill ski or snowboard. From world-class dining, shopping and gallery hopping options to skating, swimming and even fishing, there's something fun for everyone to do, especially during this joyous part of the year. To help you make the most out of all the area has to offer, here's a quick rundown of a dozen cool activities for those who don't ski or ride, or just want to take a day off from the slopes.(And don't forget to check out Robin's rundown of all the fun holiday festivities!)

Go Nordic skiing or Snowshoeing!
Both snowshoeing and Nordic, or cross-country, skiing and are fairly easy to learn for people of almost any physical abilities, allowing for great outdoor exploration in this blessed winter wonderland. And there's no better place for either novice or experienced individuals to enjoy either sport than right here in "Nordic Town USA." The Sun Valley Nordic Center and Galena Lodge have everything you need to get you out there.

Go for a Swim!
The heated Sun Valley Inn Pool is open year-round and offers breathtaking views of Baldy Mountain. The lap and splash pools at Wood River YMCA in Ketchum are also open throughout the year and are popular with families.

Take a Snowmaking Tour!
Tours are held every Wednesday and Saturday at 11am and run about an hour and half. You can sign up at the River Run Lodge ticket desk. Tours are limited to just 12 people and are free to the public, (skiers and snowboarders need to have a lift ticket).

Enjoy Live Music!
Most afternoons, the River Run Lodge offers free, topnotch live music as part of its après ski scene. You can catch acts like the Fox Street All-Stars or the Kris Lager Band at River Run, or enjoy Larry Harshbarger or Brooks Hartell on the piano most nights at The Ram in the Sun Valley Village. Please check out the Calendar for more details.  Whiskey Jacques in downtown Ketchum also offers live music on the weekends and DJ every Tuesday night.

Go Gallery Hopping!
Thanks to former resort owner Bill Janss and his wife, Glenn Cooper Janss, Sun Valley has long been known for its support of the arts and for being home to a thriving arts scene. The community is loaded with galleries and art studios that are open to the public. The exceedingly popular Gallery Walks take place in February and March 13th this winter, but you can easily make up your own version.

Go to a Movie!
Between daily afternoon showings of the "Sun Valley Serenade" to first run films offered each night, the historic Sun Valley Opera House makes it easy to enjoy a film in the midst of a community where movie stars have long loved to visit and call home.

Go Fly Fishing!
Yes, not only can you fly fish around Sun Valley during the winter months, the angling can be downright spectacular. The Big Wood River is easily one of the best winter trout fisheries in the country. The local guides at Silver Creek Outfitters in Ketchum can show you the ropes, or the experienced fisher can pick up a copy of the award-winning, year-round guidebook "Angling Around Sun Valley" at places like Sun Valley Signature & Gift Shop.

Go for a Horse-drawn Sleigh Ride!
There isn't a better way to enjoy Sun Valley's long and rather glorious Western history than by taking a Sleigh Ride from Sun Valley to Trail Creek Cabin. Offered as either a simple ride or as an evening trip to dinner and back, sleigh rides have long been a popular local activity.

Go Shopping!
From the popular shops in the Sun Valley Village to the assortments offered in Ketchum, this is a great place to go shopping! And please don't forget about Christina Healy Trunk Show, December 28th from 3-6pm at the Edelweiss room in the Sun Valley Inn.

Go Ice Skating!
The outdoor rink in Sun Valley has hosted countless Olympic skating greats and offers a truly fun and memorable activity for the whole family.

Go to the Ski and Heritage Museum!
From its origins as a mining and sheepherding hub to its Hollywood connection and being home to America's first ski resort and ski chairlift—among many industry firsts—the Sun Valley Ski & Heritage Museum is fun stop for winter sports fans and history buffs.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry!
Whether you like fresh roasted coffees and mouthwatering pastries (go to the Konditorei), lavish and memorable dining experiences (go on a sleigh ride to Trail Creek Cabin or a gondola ride to The Roundhouse) or some simply family fare like pizza (check out Bald Mountain Pizza and Pasta), Sun Valley and its sister town of Ketchum have long been well known and lauded for their culinary scene.
