Let the Season Begin!

On Saturday, June 25, the lifts on the River Run side of Bald Mountain will kick into gear, signaling the true start of the glorious Sun Valley summer season. The weather is gorgeous, the trails are open, the view from the top of Baldy is unbeatable, and it’s time to get out there and enjoy every sun-filled hour.

Start your Saturday with a free yoga class at the base of River Run. There’s no better way to get centered, calm, and ready for the adventures ahead

The start-of-season festivities kick off at River Run in many different ways. To truly get in the right mindset for your day, be sure to take advantage of Yoga on the Mountain hosted by Brass Ranch. Two complimentary classes will be offered. The first, an 8:45 a.m. Sunrise Flow will be taught by Abby Siebert and is sure to be the perfect way to wake up. Sun salutations take on a whole new meaning when performed outside. At 10 a.m., Katherine Pleasants will lead a Gentle Flow class perfect for every level. Yoga meets at the River Run Plaza and is totally free. Just remember to bring a mat, water bottle, and sunglasses. Yoga will be offered on the Plaza every Saturday morning of the summer (except July 9). Namaste!

Once you’ve worked out the kinks and gotten the blood flowing, it’s time for a hike! Whether you love to go uphill or downhill or both, the Bald Mountain Trail from River Run is a wonderful way to explore the mountain and to take in amazing views of Ketchum and beyond.  Uphill, the trail winds about five miles on switchbacks that climb Baldy, taking hikers beneath lifts, through wildflower filled meadows, and through shady groves of trees. You can hike up to the Roundhouse Restaurant, about 2/3 of the way up Baldy, or right to the top. After all that work, hop on the lift or gondola for a free ride down.

Baldy is a terrific place for a hike. Just make sure you have sturdy shoes, lots of water, sunscreen, and hat. It is definitely uphill all the way!

If your fitness level isn’t quite up to a bottom-to-top adventure … yet … then you may want to ride the gondola up to Roundhouse or the lift to the summit and explore from there. Lift tickets can be purchased at River Run Lodge and gondola and lift run daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gondola is also a great option for those who may just want to have lunch on top of the world.

Grab the gondola to Roundhouse for a wonderful, family-friendly lunch or for some nice hiking

Which brings me to The Roundhouse – a jewel of a restaurant on Baldy with jaw dropping views. The historic eatery, iconic to the Sun Valley experience, is the perfect place to lunch, whether you hiked up the hill or rode the gondola. Also starting June 25, The Roundhouse will be open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily on a walk-in basis. This summer, they will offer an informal grill menu with family favorites from cheeseburgers to veggie burgers, to gourmet soups, salads, and sandwiches. Sit on the wraparound deck, enjoy the cool mountain breeze, and tuck into a great meal before setting out on your next adventure. The restaurant was built in 1939 and no visit to Sun Valley is complete without enjoying a meal in this unique spot.

Enjoying lunch on the deck at Roundhouse is one of the true pleasures of a Sun Valley summer

Mountain biking, another very popular recreational option on Baldy, will open on July 1.  Please check back to this blog for the many trail options and bike rentals. In the meantime, local trails including the White Clouds Loop, Sunrise Loop, and Corral Creek trails are a terrific way to get in mountain biking shape. If you’d like instruction or more information about these bike rides, as well as about hiking on Baldy, stop by Pete Lane’s in the Sun Valley Village and let the experts at the Adventure Center advise you.

The popular Spider Jump Bungee Trampoline is a super fun way to play

Finally, for the kids, or the kid in you, the popular Spider Jump Bungee Trampoline returns this summer.  From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, strap in and soar on this crazy fun contraption at the River Run Plaza that helps you launch, spin, flip, and most certainly, laugh. At the base of River Run you will also find river access, great shopping, and even a coffee cart to help you keep your energy level up!

The action is at River Run this summer and it all begins now. Enjoy this first official weekend of the season in an authentic Sun Valley way!

Favorite Holiday Traditions Old and New

The holidays in Sun Valley are unique. From the snow-covered peaks (and ski runs!) that surround the Wood River Valley, to the old-fashioned charm of the Sun Valley Village and the decidedly European feel of the Resort, Christmas in Sun Valley is straight out of a beloved picture book. I have spent more than 30 Christmases in Sun Valley and while I certainly appreciate all that the Resort does to keep current (our amazing snowmaking and grooming, the gorgeous Lodge remodel, The Spa, and new
