It’s beginning to look a lot like ski season. Baldy’s slopes are clearly delineated in delightful winter white, the forecast this week looks wonderfully snowy (more than a foot of snow expected!), and anticipation fills the air. In just a week, at 9 a.m. on Thursday, November 23, the lifts at the base of River Run and Dollar will spring into action, carrying the lucky first skiers and boarders to the start of what is sure to be an amazing year. This year, Sun Valley celebrates its 82nd season as America’s premiere destination ski resort...
Skiing & Riding
If you can’t get enough of big air and big tricks on Dollar’s terrain park, as a participant or spectator, then this is the week for you. From an amateur rail jam to some of the best high-flying skiers and snowboarders around, you really don’t want to miss this. It is literally going to be huge.
Before Men’s Snowboard Big Air becomes an Olympic event in 2018, check out the spectacle on Dollar at an exhibition on March 25
The big show takes place on Friday, March 25, when a Big Air Exhibition launches on Dollar. The terrain park pros have built the biggest jump these parts have ever seen: bigger than those constructed this winter in Fenway Park (140-feet high); bigger than the X-Games. We kid you not. Some of the highest flying freestyle athletes will come show how it’s done ahead of the men’s snowboard Big Air debut in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. This event is part of a week of welcoming the top talent in snow sports during the U.S. Alpine National Championships and this Big Air Exhibition. Come out and watch this amazing show that will leave you holding your breath and cheering out loud.
Both skiers and snowboarders will be taken to the top of the jump by snowmobile before launching themselves down the slope, sometimes as fast as 40 mph. Expect Sun Valley’s sponsored rep team athletes, top freestylers from the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation and others to participate in this exhibition. According to Sun Valley’s Tony Parkhill, “we are taking the two big jumps from the slopestyle course on Dollar and building huge Big Air jump. It will be epic.” Warm ups on Friday begin at about 3 p.m. with the event beginning at 4:30 p.m.
If you want an idea of what to expect, check out the Big Air jump built at Boston’s Fenway Park this winter. Ours will be equally impressive but much more bucolic!
To add to the fun, don’t miss “Happy Hour on Dollar.” Starting Friday afternoon, food and beverage vendors will sell their delicious wares in the Dollar parking lot. On the deck of Carol’s Dollar Mountain Lodge, a DJ will get the party started. The view of the Big Air jump is absolutely perfect from the deck of the lodge. Inside, VIP’s from the U.S. Alpine National Championships will enjoy a special party and, if we’re lucky, might mix with the spectators for the exhibition.
Before the athletes fly in the Big Air competition, local shredders are invited to take part in the High Noon Shootout Rail Jam on March 19
But before the athletes fly on the big jump, tomorrow, March 19, a celebration of everything involving jibs -- rails, boxes, jumps and other challenging and fun features, kicks off at high noon. In fact, this event, dubbed the “High Noon Shootout Rail Jam” is the perfect chance for you to show off your skills. Registration will take place at the SnowSports Desk at Carol’s Dollar Mountain Lodge from 10 – 11 a.m. Then head out to Half and full Dollar to practice your park skills from 11 a.m. to noon when the showdown begins.
Dollar’s Terrain Park will be the epicenter of action at a spring Rail Jam. Come one, come all!
This week, Sun Valley really is the epicenter of American ski racing and is on the cutting edge of the newest Olympic sport. We are so pleased and proud to have all the amazing athletes on our slopes, inspiring our mountain community.
And remember, go big or go home!
