Skiing & Riding
Full disclosure: After a week on the beach during spring break, I wasn’t totally delighted to come home to an Easter snowstorm. Flip flops had felt pretty good in the place of boots! But my attitude quickly changed when I got back on the slopes last week and enjoyed some truly fantastic spring skiing. The joys of skiing into the spring months in Sun Valley – corn snow, blue skies, warm sun, endless fun -- almost made me forget sand and surf. Everyone on the hill and at the base of the mountain is simply grinning from ear-to-ear right now and for good reason.
Spring in Sun Valley means bluebird skies, bright sunshine, great snow and loving every minute of every turn
There is something liberating about shedding a few layers, slathering on the sunscreen and getting out there to take advantage of the last few weeks of the season. The pressure is off and it’s all about being in the moment and enjoying every last turn. With Baldy scheduled to end the season on April 17, there’s still lots of skiing and riding to be done.
Standing atop Baldy, basking in the warm sun was the perfect way to re-acclimate to being home. The view across the Pioneer Mountain range was especially spectacular with the high peaks still completely blanketed in snow and laced with vividly white clouds. But standing around isn’t why you click into your bindings or secure your snowboard on Baldy. The slopes called!
Yes, it is as nice as it looks.
This time of year, the runs on the southerly facing slopes are particularly spectacular. When the sun hits runs like Ridge, Ridge South Slopes and Christmas Ridge, the corn starts to come off and the skiing is exhilarating and joyful. It’s really hard not to shout with delight all the way down. This time of year the whole mountain skis really well. Warm Springs is bathed in light and sun, and Frenchman’s glades beckon! You really can’t go wrong anywhere.
On Wednesday, I skied all of the above, spirits lifted with the elevation. Then, as is de rigueur with spring skiing, I grabbed a table on the deck of River Run and enjoyed lunch in the sunshine. Somehow the always delicious food tastes even better when eaten outdoors. The lifts on the River Run side of the mountain are scheduled to close on April 10 so make sure you get over there now to take advantage of all those great runs.
Local fitness guru and expert skier Tim Hanna was also on the hill on Wednesday, shredding with some fast friends. He agreed that the conditions were fantastic, calling the snow “buttery” and “creamy.” “Spring skiing is fantastic right now,” he said. “A lot of local skiers are out making the most of the last few weeks and skiing really beautifully. It’s a great time up there.” His favorite runs right now? The ones on which he can make big, beautiful turns: Ridge into Blue Grouse, Flying Squirrel, and Lower Warm Springs.
Local enthusiasts Tim Hanna and Jeannie Kiel enjoy some sunshine and buttery snow as the season winds down

Part of the fun of spring skiing is a meal or a beverage on the deck of one of the lodges. Cheers!
See you on the slopes for a few more weeks. Make sure you get out there and take advantage of some of the best days of the year. Every time I go spring skiing, even if just for a few hours, I feel like I enjoyed a true getaway, a tiny little vacation. Wahoo!
