Think back to the summers of your childhood. Remember sunny hours just waiting to be filled with fun? No plans, just possibilities! Long school-less days probably included splashing in a pool, lake, or ocean, bike rides, adventuring, and exploring. There was time to daydream, time to try something new, time to simply be in the present and to be a kid. The days seemed endless and you wished summer would last forever. An old-fashioned, authentic, imagination and activity-based summer still defines the season in Sun Valley for children. With about 15 hours of sunlight during the high season, there is nothing but time to take advantage of all the ingredients...
Summer is just around the corner and, for children, there is nothing better than spending it in Sun Valley. The warm weather months should be full of adventure in the outdoors for little ones – chances to explore, to play, to try something new – and Sun Valley’s Adventure Camp offers all of this and much more. For children between 6 and 10 years old, camp runs all summer long from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday – Friday. Each week embraces adventures that include hiking, biking, river and stream exploration, swimming, orienteering, exploration and ice skating. This year, each week also features a special theme.
Shannon Connauton, director of Sun Valley Adventure Camp, is excited for the season to come. “This will be a great year for Adventure Camp,” she enthused. “We are going to expand the adventures and the children will love it.”
At Sun Valley Adventure Camp, explorers get outside, get moving and probably get a little dirty!
Top counselors and specially trained guides lead children through unforgettable explorations inspired by the glorious valley surrounding the Resort. In addition to regularly scheduled activities, each week throughout the summer has a special theme. Some of the planned themes include: Wild Idaho, Creative Construction, Survive Sun Valley, Wild Treasures and Earth, Stars & Space.
Each themed week provides unique opportunities for fun. For instance, during Fantasy Week from June 15 – 19, campers will create a world of castles, dragons, knights, ninjas, princesses and much more. During Wild West Week from July 13 – 17, adventurers will step back in time to learn what it was like to live in the west years ago. From August 3 – 7, camp gets wet during All Things H20 week. Campers will explore pools, lakes, rivers and create an extreme water table, play water games, have water balloon fights and stay cool while having a splashing good time!
From exploring history, to reaching for the stars, this year’s new themed adventure weeks will keep the fun meter turned to high
“The theme weeks will guide our activities,” Connauton explained. “For instance, our Wild Treasures week will teach kids about map skills, orienteering and they will get a chance to stump the counselors by making their own map to the treasure of their choice!”
In addition to adventures further afield, the camp takes advantage of Sun Valley Resort’s many fun activities. Children will bowl in the fabulous new bowling alley at the Sun Valley Lodge, skate at the gorgeous outdoor rink, play golf and tennis, ride the gondola up Bald Mountain, swim in Sun Valley’s pools, bungee trampoline and enjoy arts & crafts for a little quieter time.
Sun Valley is a magical place for children, especially during the summer. Days are seemingly endless, the sky is a brilliant blue and adventure is always around the corner.
