Sun Valley Restaurants 101

You have arrived for your much-anticipated Sun Valley vacation and settled into your perfect room at the Lodge, Inn, or condos.  Skis and boards have been rented or taken in for a quick tune; you know where the whole family’s helmets and goggles are; you are ready to go. But first, food!  Sun Valley offers many choices for dining, whether it’s a quick pastry at breakfast or a fine five-course prix fixe dinner. To help you navigate your gastronomic choices, here is Sun Valley Restaurants 101. Please note: hours of operation change depending on time of year, so please call or check in with Sun Valley Restaurant Reservations for the most current information.


Known for: having one of the valley’s top chefs in the kitchen only the finest, freshest, locally-sourced ingredients, an inventive menu, a casual atmosphere for breakfast and lunch and fine dining in the evening. This is the Lodge’s flagship restaurant.
My favorite pick: The orange and pomegranate salad with frisee, watercress, pickled fennel, Asian pear, aged ricotta, star anise vinaigrette

Chef Derek Gallegos of Gretchen’s is a gastronomic genius and is famous for his attention to detail and hands-on style

The Duchin Lounge
Known for: a lively atmosphere, great bar scene, hand-crafted cocktails, live music, tasty snacks
My favorite pick: smoked Idaho trout
Reservations: not required
Meals served: gourmet bar food, burgers, snacks

Children’s menu: no, but kid-friendly choices are available

Poolside Café
Known for: a casual, comfortable atmosphere, bright, inventive food to match the décor, hand-crafted cocktails, great views over Sun Valley’s outdoor pool and Bald Mountain. Offers the same menu as the Duchin Lounge
Reservations: not required
Hours: 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Of note: the Poolside Café is open to the public and food is served on the pool deck in addition to the restaurant in warm weather months

The Konditorei:
Known for: decadent European-style pastries, inventive and delicious coffee and hot chocolate drinks, the best Sunday brunch in town with specialty food items and hand-crafted Bloody Mary’s, fresh salads and sandwiches, and Austrian-inspired fare
My favorite pick: Eggs Florentine at Sunday brunch

The Austrian-inspired Konditorei is a casual yet lovely place to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and Sunday brunch

A la Mode
Known for: being the sweetest place in Sun Valley with signature hot chocolate drinks and ice cream creations
My favorite pick: The Classic Sun Valley hot chocolate made with dark and white chocolate, house-made marshmallows, whipped cream

Short Line Deli
Known for: delicious made-to-order sandwiches, salads and sides, wines to go, snacks, and lots of grab-and-go options
My favorite pick: Turkey and salami sandwich with swiss, butter leaf, roasted red pepper, oil & red wine vinegar on an Idaho potato roll

Bald Mountain Pizza and Pasta
Known for: the best pizza in town, delicious and plentiful pasta dishes, beer and wine, favorites like mozzarella sticks, and a casual family atmosphere
My favorite pick: The wild mushroom pizza with Portobello, shiitake, Parisian mushrooms, caramelized onion & roasted garlic

Bald Mountain Pizza and Pasta offers family-friendly, tasty, and plentiful fare. My 12-year-old son’s favorite dish? The meatball marinara!

The Ram
Known for: decadent cheese fondue, the finest steaks, an innovative locally-sourced menu, gourmet choices from foie gras to beef tartare, lamb shank, and sturgeon
Reservations: recommended for dinner
My favorite pick: chicken served with butternut squash risotto, broccolini, pecan pan sauce

Of note: in the summer, the action moves to the gorgeous Ram deck overlooking the swan pond

The Ram Bistro
Known for: a great place to grab a light dinner, snack, cocktail or glass of wine in a spacious comfortable room
My favorite pick: truffle fries and four cheese mac

Hours: Monday through Thursday and Sunday, 4 – 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 4 p.m. to midnight

Trail Creek Cabin
Known for:  Magical horse drawn sleighs that ferry guests to dinner in this historic cabin, amazing scones, family-friendly and group-friendly fare, a unique, warm, and inviting atmosphere, four-course dinner with choices
My favorite pick: the scones and the rotisserie chicken
Reservations: required for dinner and sleigh rides
Meals served: dinner
Hours: closed Mondays and Tuesdays except during peak holiday weeks. Numerous seatings per night

Located:  East of the Sun Valley Lodge

A sleigh ride to historic Trail Creek Cabin should be on everyone’s winter must-do list. It’s magical and the food is delicious!

Sun Valley Club
Known for: A bright spacious dining room serving delicious, fresh salads, sandwiches, and specials. Perfect for meeting a group, fueling up after cross country skiing, or socializing before or after a round of golf
My favorite pick: southwest chicken salad with romaine lettuce, black beans, jicama, cotija cheese, pumpkin seeds, tortilla strips. Roasted poblano dressing

Located:  East of the Sun Valley Lodge

The Roundhouse
Known for: a beautiful historic restaurant perched two-thirds of the way up Bald Mountain, roaring fires in the winter, unbeatable views, excellent ski-in lunches and very special prix-fixe weekend dinner in season, all served on white linens with crystal and silver. Averell’s Bar at Roundhouse is the most special place in town for après-ski.
My favorite pick:  lunch – roasted butternut bisque; dinner -- seared rare Hawaiian Ahi tuna; anytime – cheese fondue

Of note: For lunch, if members of your party don’t wish to ski-in to Roundhouse, they may purchase a lift ticket on the gondola for round-trip transportation from the River Run Lodge

Lunch or dinner on-mountain at the historic Roundhouse is one of the most special, and delicious ways, to enjoy a meal in Sun Valley

Four day lodges on Bald Mountain, and Carol’s Dollar Mountain Lodge offer some of the finest “ski food” in the country. Whether you are in the mood for a quick cup of soup (and a famous dinner roll) to help you warm up, or you want to enjoy a full meal and a cocktail, one of the lodges is sure to suit your needs.

Warm Springs Lodge (Bald Mountain)
Known for: famous, piping-hot chocolate chip cookies, a wide selection of entrees served cafeteria style, wine and beer, live music

River Run Lodge (Bald Mountain)
Known for: the best bar in town, made-to-order stir fry, great pizza, burgers, sandwiches and soups, and a huge salad bar, live music

Seattle Ridge Lodge (Bald Mountain)
Known for: lunch with a view, a large variety of hot and cold items served cafeteria style, wine and beer, a great gathering place midway through a day on the hill

Lookout (Bald Mountain)
Known for:  two words: taco bar. This locals’ favorite serves hot and ready tacos to suit every taste and the prices can’t be beat

Carol’s Dollar Mountain Lodge (Dollar Mountain)
Known for: a huge step up from most mountain food that caters, in part, to the tiniest shredders. There is a large selection of family-friendly choices, healthy selections, and offerings for more sophisticated palates. For the grown ups, grab a beer or wine and sit on the deck to watch the show on the terrain park

Whether you are here for a long weekend, or the entire season, as a couple or a family of five, Sun Valley’s many dining options are sure to please. Work up an appetite playing in the mountains and then indulge – you’ve earned it!
