The Season for Treats

If you have ever visited the Konditorei in the Sun Valley Village, you know the Austrian-inspired eatery and bakery tempts even the most disciplined person with cases filled with homemade, fresh treats. From whimsical cupcakes to traditional Linzer tarts, the pastries, created by master pastry chef Chris McCarthy, are favorites of locals and visitors alike. During the holidays, the variety and flavors of sweet offerings multiply even further and special seasonal specialties are available starting at Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving simply isn’t complete without pies for dessert, but for many, baking a perfect pie is difficult. Trying to achieve a light, flaky crust and just the right fillings might be better left to the professionals! The Konditorei creates perfect pies with gorgeous lattice crusts that look as great as they taste. They are offering traditional pumpkin, pecan, and apple. Pre-order your choices by calling (208) 622-2235 and set the date for pick up on the day before major holidays. Each delicious offering is $25 and pie season extends right through the end of December!

No Thanksgiving feast is complete without pie and Sun Valley’s Konditorei bakes the tastiest, most indulgent ones around

As it gets closer to the December holiday season and planning for perfect family dinners begins in earnest, count on the Konditorei to help. Seasonal treats abound! My favorite is the Konditorei Yule Log. These festive log-shaped cakes have a long holiday tradition and this version is crafted from chocolate cake and chocolate mousse and finished with chocolate butter cream, edible confectioners mushrooms, holly leaves, candy rocks and Oreo crumbs for “dirt.” Yule Logs make a beautiful statement during the holiday season and should be ordered ahead. They are available December 1 to December 31 and come in full size for $85 and half size for half the price!

Holiday Cookie Tins are a great thing to stock up on and have handy to offer to a houseful of visitors, to bring to a party as the perfect hostess gift, or to thank your favorite teacher or other important people in your life. The Konditorei’s festive tins contain 16 – 18 assorted holiday cookies, including snowball cookies, gingerbread men, sugar cookies, almond macaroons, thumbprints, and chocolate chip cookies. While there will be some available at the Konditorei daily, order yours ahead during the month of December to make sure they don’t sell out when you need them. Each tin is $20.

The pastry case at the Konditorei is tempting, indeed, and will be even more so over the holidays with the addition of seasonal treats

A favorite family holiday tradition is also made easy at the Konditorei. Decorate-Your-Own-Gingerbread-House Kits will be stocked and ready to delight children young and old. Be sure to bring one home and spend quality time over this old-fashioned activity – a perfect way to enjoy some down time after a busy day skiing, riding, or sledding

Just in time for the holidays, pick up the Konditorei’s Coffee Lovers Packages including excellent local coffee plus brewing methods and mugs. Instant gift!

In addition to pastries, the Konditorei is known for its delicious hot drinks and, again, the menu is perfect for the season. For instance, Konditorei manager Matt Robinson has created a healthy version of an Almond Joy candy bar coffee using coconut oil, organic almond milk, and dark chocolate. Gingerbread, peppermint, housemade vanilla using fresh vanilla beans are other favorite flavors. Talented baristas create latte art (and hot chocolate art) sure to put a smile on your face.

For the coffee lovers in your life, the Konditorei will also be offering special gift packages for the holidays. These include three brewing methods -- French Press, Aero Press, Pour Over -- paired with locally roasted (and delicious) whole beans, traveler cups and mugs.

The baristas at the Konditorei want to make your day merry and bright by creating special art on coffee drinks and hot chocolates like this darling bear. They taste as good as they look!

Be sure to also enjoy a delicious meal at the Konditorei over the holidays. As decadent as the pastries are, the food is also sublime. Extended hours allow you to enjoy traditional Austrian fare and modern interpretations at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. From December 17 to December 31, the Konditorei will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and even longer, until 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. On those nights, a special holiday dinner three-course prix fixe menu will be offered in addition to the regular a la carte menu. Matt is calling this delicious and casual option (no reservations required) a “Taste of the Alps.”

The holidays are sweet! Let the Konditorei make them even sweeter. Call 208-622-2235 to order all the treats sure to make everyone on your list, smile.

Favorite Holiday Traditions Old and New

The holidays in Sun Valley are unique. From the snow-covered peaks (and ski runs!) that surround the Wood River Valley, to the old-fashioned charm of the Sun Valley Village and the decidedly European feel of the Resort, Christmas in Sun Valley is straight out of a beloved picture book. I have spent more than 30 Christmases in Sun Valley and while I certainly appreciate all that the Resort does to keep current (our amazing snowmaking and grooming, the gorgeous Lodge remodel, The Spa, and new
