Eclipse 2017

The Great American Solar Eclipse | August 21, 2017

What is it? When is it happening?

The Great American Solar Eclipse – when the moon completely blocks the sun - will be happening on August 21, 2017. This is the first time since 1979 that the total eclipse of the sun will be visible from all 48 contiguous states and the first time it will be visible from coast-to-coast in the US since 1918. The United States will be the only country in the world to experience the entire total solar eclipse.

Where will it be going?

Ketchum and Sun Valley are right in the pathway of the eclipse. The partial eclipse will begin at 10:12:37 am and total eclipse will begin at 11:29:38 am.

How can I experience it? Take a lift to the Sun…

Witness the partial and total solar eclipse in Sun Valley, where you’ll be able to ride the chairlift or gondola up Bald Mountain for a unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Lifts will be operating from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tickets are currently SOLD OUT.

Burning questions (wear your sunscreen!)

Where can tickets be purchased?
Tickets may be purchased online.

Can Sun Valley season passes, Mountain Collective passes or employee passes be used for riding the lifts and/or gondola up and down the mountain for the Solar Eclipse event?
Sorry, this is a special event. These passes may not be used to access the lifts for uploading and/or downloading on Monday, August 21. All guests accessing the lifts and/or gondola must have a Solar Eclipse ticket that will be exchanged for a colored wristband on the day of the event.

Where and how soon before the event can tickets be picked-up?
Tickets may be picked-up at the Sun Valley Recreation office or the River Run ticketing counter starting on Monday, August 14 at 9:00 am. Tickets will then be exchanged for colored wristbands the day of the event, prior to loading the lifts. Wristband colors will match the lift/s to ride up the mountain. Wristband stations will be located at the River Run [and Warm Springs base areas].

What color is my lift and wristband?
The ticket level will indicate what color you will follow for lift route and parking. Attendees must wear their wristband at all times during the event and while on the mountain. This is important for accessing the lifts, and any special areas.
Green = River Run | #1 River Run to #5 Lookout Express
Blue = Warm Springs | #10 Challenger
Gold = River Run | #2 Roundhouse Gondola to #3 Christmas
Black Diamond / VIP = River Run | #2 Roundhouse Gondola to #3 Christmas + The Roundhouse access

What about glasses?
Special viewing glasses are required and must be worn during the event. Glasses may be purchased online and picked up prior to or on the day of the event at the Sun Valley Recreation office and any Sun Valley retail location. Glasses will not be shipped.

Where may I park for this amazing event?
Parking will be assigned based on the ticket level. Please park in the areas matching your ticket/wristband color. Black Diamond/VIP ticket holders will have special parking in the lower parking lot at River Run.

Do I need to ride the same lifts down as I rode up?
Yes, the uploading and downloading routes will be the same, based on your color-coded wristband. Signage will be placed at each loading line with color designations. Your wristband must match the color of the lift line in order to upload and/or download the lift.

What about kids and dogs?
Children must be at least 3 years old in order to ride the chairlift. They may not be carried on the lift in a backpack or other body tote.
Sorry, dogs are not allowed.

A lift ticket is required for downloading. If people wish to hike or mountain bike up the mountain, they may not ride the lift or gondola down without a lift ticket for the Solar Eclipse event. This is due to downloading capacity restrictions, and for the safety and experience of all guests. Season passes and Mountain Collective passes may not be used as a lift ticket for the Solar Eclipse event.
Lifts will be running continuously for downloading, however, we are anticipating extended wait periods. Please plan accordingly.

Mountain Bike Lift Serve / Gondola Rides
Mountain bike lift serve and gondola rides will not be available on Monday, August 21 for this special event. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, August 22 at 9:00 am.

Non-Refundable / Non-Transferable
Lift tickets purchased for the Solar Eclipse on August 21 are non-refundable and non-transferable. Refunds will not be issued due to weather conditions.

Mountain weather can be unpredictable. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for changing conditions. Also, please note that the temperature may drop 10-15 degrees during the actual Eclipse. Please prepare accordingly.
