Style on the Slopes

With only a week to go until the 2014-15 ski season officially kicks into gear, now is the time to begin to think about looking hot in the winter cold. It is also the best time of the year to shop for new skiwear (or to make your holiday wish list) because Sun Valley's shops are full of the latest and greatest jackets, pants, layering pieces and accessories to outfit the entire family in style.

It's a bright and colorful year in skiwear and the selection is great right now

Connie Post, the buyer at Pete Lane's  in the Sun Valley Village, said the most important part of outfitting skiers and snowboarders for the Sun Valley lifestyle is knowing your customer. "Sun Valley skiers love high fashion and the latest trends, but they also value quality, durability and price," she said. "We truly carry something for everyone. The best part about this year's lines are that skiers can dress however they want – from monochromatic to multi-patterned – and they will look great and current on the mountain."

Connie added that it's a great year for ski fashion and a walk through Pete Lane's in the Sun Valley Village and both the Brass Ranch at the Village and at the base of River Run bear this out.

Colorful and sporty pieces prevail this season as shown in this Bogner jacket. Notice the great details like the bandana-pattern lining

"We are seeing lots of color this year which I love," Connie said, "because you stand out on the hill.  There are also lots of patterns, especially in layering pieces that add texture and interest to any outfit. For those who prefer neutrals, though, black, white, grey and camel are also available and as elegant and timeless as always. It really is a year where you can find something perfect to suit your personal style."

The popular KJus line also shows the layering trend in slightly more muted colors

Skiwear takes a cue from the runway with fun plaid pieces and accessories

Connie is a big fan of incorporating layering pieces. "They not only add interest," she said "but they make everything lighter weight and also more flattering."

The smallest skiers (sledders, players in the snow) can find fashion-forward, fun and affordable ways to keep warm at Pete Lane's

Kids' outerwear is colorful making it easy to spot your child against the white

According to Sun Valley retail guru Kelly Mitchell other trends include: bold prints and mixed patterns, saturated colors, sporty looks with pops of color, recycled fur treatments and accessories and anything "techy" like jacket features that accommodate different devices, cords and even GoPros.

Don't forget the men in your life! This year's men's lines are fashionable with an emphasis on performance, and yes, layering. Brass Ranch at River Run has a comprehensive men's department, perfect for holiday gifts

Be sure to shop early as Resort stores normally only carry one or two pieces in each size and you don't want to miss out.

Pete Lane's carries lines at many price points including Columbia, which is always top rated, fashion-forward and very durable

"The focus in Sun Valley is truly on the mountain lifestyle, not only on dressing for the slopes," Connie said. "Great ski wear should keep you warm and dry and stylish on the mountain, but should also transition to all the wonderful fun to have off the hill."

Looking good off the slopes is important, too. Pete Lane's carries popular down skirts, perfect for aprés ski

Pop into Pete Lane's and Brass Ranch now for the best selection so you will look great on opening day and beyond. The wonderful staff at each location will help you choose just the right piece or will drop appropriate hints about your wish list to family members!

See you soon on the slopes!

The ski season kicks off in just over a week and Baldy is sure looking good! Picture yourself on these slopes - looking equally good!

The holidays in Sun Valley are unique. From the snow-covered peaks (and ski runs!) that surround the Wood River Valley, to the old-fashioned charm of the Sun Valley Village and the decidedly European feel of the Resort, Christmas in Sun Valley is straight out of a beloved picture book. I have spent more than 30 Christmases in Sun Valley and while I certainly appreciate all that the Resort does to keep current (our amazing snowmaking and grooming, the gorgeous Lodge remodel, The Spa, and new
