Radio Frequence Identification (RFID) is a technology commonly used in ski passes and lift tickets where a small chip in the pass allows passive communication with scanners or gates to validate mountain access. This technology allows skiers and riders to validate their passes or tickets without getting the physical card out of their pocket.
RFID gates are in place at Bald and Dollar Mountain base areas as of winter 2025-2026.
You can keep your season pass or Sun Valley Card in your jacket pocket (chest or sleeve pocket preferred). Once you approach the gates your lift access media will scan through your pocket and the gates will open.
We recommend only carrying the pass or lift ticket that you want to use for that day, as the first product that is identified by the scanners is what will be used for access for the entire day. If you have an Ikon Pass or Mountain Collective Pass in addition to a Sun Valley Pass or lift ticket, only carry the pass that you would like to use for that day.
It is also best not to put anything else in the same pocket as your ticket/pass, such as your cellphone or wallet, as it may interfere with the scanners.
Yes, lift tickets at Sun Valley now use RFID technology and may be purchased online or at any ticket window. When you purchase a lift ticket you will be issued a reusable Sun Valley Card that can be reloaded with more lift tickets throughout your stay or season to season. If purchased online, your Sun Valley Card can be printed at a kiosk in the River Run base area using the barcode in your confirmation email, as well as any lift ticket window at Bald and Dollar Mountains.
You can reload your Sun Valley Card with more days either online or at any lift ticket window. To do so online, login to your account and choose ‘Reload Sun Valley Card’ during the ticket checkout process. You can either select the existing card you would like to reload or type in the card number when prompted.
If you have reloaded a lift ticket onto an existing Sun Valley Card online, you can go directly to the lift. There is no need to visit a lift ticket window or kiosk.
As is common at other resorts, employees remain in lift lines and corrals to monitor scans and ensure the correct guest is utilizing the pass.
