Just last week, a Saturday night dinner at the Ram Restaurant in Sun Valley Village seemed like a great idea. One member of our party was anxious to try the nightly $25 special of Hungarian Goulash, and an evening spent at the beautiful eatery, accompanied by live piano music, and noshing on delicious food sounded perfect. Our decision proved even more prescient when the server announced that the Ram was running a spring special: fondue for two (free!) with the purchase of any two entrees. It was a bubbling, gold prize at the end of the proverbial rainbow!

While summer and winter may be the most popular seasons in Sun Valley, many folks will tell you fall is actually the best time to be here, especially if you like to swing the sticks.
The big crowds have departed, but all the fun stuff to do like hike, fish, shop, hit the spa, mountain bike and golf are still available, with special fall rates kicking in for most activities and accommodations. And the great news for golfing fans is that Sun Valley’s three courses are in the midst of one of the best seasons ever.
“Conditions are fantastic,” said Steve Haims, who has been working at the Sun Valley Club for nearly a decade and has been playing golf locally for over 30 years. “Alex Bliss and his team have a done a great job. The courses are in as good a shape as people have seen them in years.”
With ideal conditions from the fairways on Trail Creek to the roughs at the White Clouds and greens on the Elkhorn course, golfing in Sun Valley has been very popular this year.
“It’s been a stellar season,” said Sun Valley Resort’s Mike Wrobel, lauding the work of the greens keeping team. “They have done an unbelievable job.”
Golfers have been raving about the conditions all season and that should continue as the warm summer gives way to Sun Valley’s beloved crisp and colorful autumn days. With fall specials kicking in and prices falling like aspen leaves, there is no better time to hit the links.
The fall Value Season kicks off at Elkhorn this week and the other Sun Valley courses on September 19th, when greens fees are cut nearly in half. There are also Stay and Play packages available that, as Steve put it, “makes it like getting a free round of golf” with your room.
The Pro Shop at the Sun Valley Club is also offering specials on apparel, while the popular restaurant and bar will continue to offer après golfing specials and views of Baldy and Dollar Mountains that are awfully tough to top.
The Sawtooth Putting Course is also a very popular spot for golfers of all ages and abilities. “People love it. The putting course is a hit with both residents and guests,” Steve said.
My two young sons love to play Sun Valley’s mini-golf course and the few times we’ve played it this year there have been lots of smiling and giggling faces playing alongside ours.
The driving range is also open to the public, as is the Indoor Virtual Golf game, for those rare days when it actually rains long enough to cancel an outdoor activity. Rain usually only delays outdoor fun around here, it rarely cancels it.
If you have plans to golf anywhere besides Sun Valley this fall you should probably cancel them and make sure you’re swinging the sticks here. If you love to golf, it doesn’t get any better than Sun Valley in autumn.
As Steve so eloquently said, “With the trees turning color, the great conditions and the deals, there’s no reason you shouldn’t come play golf in Sun Valley.”
