Food, Glorious Summer Food

With the reopening of the gorgeous Sun Valley Lodge next week, it is time to start thinking not only of sumptuous guest rooms, a world-class spa and endless summer recreation, but also about amazing food. The reimagining of the Lodge involved a complete reinvention of the property’s eateries and we think you’re going to love them.

Meals will be served in four restaurants at the Sun Valley Lodge, as well as through room service. Each has a unique character and flavor.

Summer fare at Gretchen’s Restaurant at the Sun Valley Lodge promises to fresh, locally-sourced and full of flavor for breakfast, lunch or dinner

Located in the soaring new lobby, Gretchen’s Restaurant will be the hotel’s dining hub. Serving light and hearty breakfasts lunches and dinners, the new menu is sure to please.  Choices for breakfast include the Lodge “Power Bowl” – an egg white scramble with quinoa, baby kale, edamame, sweet corn and tomatillo salsa; traditional lox and bagels; the best Huevos Rancheros anywhere; and Dungeness Crab Cake Eggs Benedict. For lunch, diners may chose among a large menu of small plate and big plate items. On the small plate side are summer heirloom tomatoes, a baby golden beet salad and a B.L.T salad. Big plates include ginger fried chicken sandos, a Lodge burger and a pork belly Panini. For dinner, start with a Maine lobster salad, sweet corn bisque or a grilled whole artichoke. Then make the difficult choice between Idaho rack of lamb, a wurst plate, Alaskan day-boat halibut and other plates to tantalize the taste buds. All the food is locally sourced whenever possible and focuses on the freshest in-season offerings.

The Gretchen’s kitchen will also serve the new Poolside Café. Whether you and your family are luxuriating on the new pool deck for the day or just popping in for a bite, there is something to please everyone. Enjoy a watermelon salad or a spa Caesar, a black bean and wild rice burger or wild shrimp tacos. Perhaps you are in the mood for a flatbread pizza. Choose from Caprese, antipasto, Greek, Asian chicken or B.L.T.

Chef Derek Gallegos, formerly of the Konditorei, is at the helm of the new kitchen and his culinary creativity has to be tasted to be fully appreciated.

Across the lobby from Gretchen’s, the Duchin Lounge will also serve delicious fare. Unwind after a day of play over a glass of wine and a shrimp and avocado cocktail, a lobster roll, melon and prosciutto or roasted mushroom caps. It’s a beautiful spot to grab a bite and enjoy the magnificent views.

Downstairs at the newly redesigned Bowling and Game Room, the food is anything but the expected. Bowl a few games, enjoy the arcade and then sit down for a bucket of fried chicken with tater tots, slow-braised St. Louis ribs, baked mac ‘n’ cheese, signature hot dogs, or the “rock around the clock” fries – hand cut Russets with bacon spice and Idaho fry sauce. Yum! They will also serve specialty floats. The new game space offers digital scoring, six regulation bowling lanes, a pool table, Foosball, a juke box and much more.

The new Poolside Café located adjacent to Sun Valley’s new world-class spa will offer tasty, light and healthy selections

In addition, the Ram Restaurant in the Sun Valley Village will offer its signature fare and beautiful patio dining and the Ram Lounge will continue to provide a comfortable place to kick back and enjoy a light meal and a drink. The Konditorei will offer its wonderful European pastries and delicious meals in style. The Short Line Deli is a great place to pop in for a sandwich or to create a memorable picnic and be sure not to miss the ice cream delights at a la mode.

All the restaurants at the Lodge, and throughout the Resort, seek to provide flavorful cuisine that showcases the best organic, sustainably–farmed elements in both indulgent and healthy selections. I, for one, can’t wait to dig in!

Spring into Seasonal Savings: Stay, Play, Enjoy!

Just last week, a Saturday night dinner at the Ram Restaurant in Sun Valley Village seemed like a great idea. One member of our party was anxious to try the nightly $25 special of Hungarian Goulash, and an evening spent at the beautiful eatery, accompanied by live piano music, and noshing on delicious food sounded perfect. Our decision proved even more prescient when the server announced that the Ram was running a spring special: fondue for two (free!) with the purchase of any two entrees. It was a bubbling, gold prize at the end of the proverbial rainbow!
