I don’t know about you, but by the weekend, I look forward to a break from preparing dinner every night for my family – not to mention the shopping and clean up! Likewise, when I am on vacation, I look for a restaurant that will appeal to our whole group but that won’t break the bank. Throw in a little family-friendly entertainment and things are pretty much perfect!
Whether you are a Wood River Valley local or are enjoying a fun-filled and busy Sun Valley vacation, a night at Bald Mountain Pizza & Pasta solves the issue of how to feed your family in a budget-friendly way. Throw in a free movie pass to the Sun Valley Opera House for anyone enjoying dinner at this cozy restaurant and it is a slam dunk!
Bald Mountain Pizza & Pasta, located in the heart of the Sun Valley Village, is a great place to enjoy a family-friendly, affordable meal
Located in the heart of the Sun Valley Village, Bald Mountain Pizza & Pasta keeps things simple, very tasty and affordable. Both a children’s menu and regular menu feature hearty pasta dishes from simple penne Alfredo to pesto shrimp scampi to lasagna with house made Bolognese. Signature pizzas range from plain old cheese for the kiddos to smoked pulled pork and Gouda for more sophisticated palates. The bestseller at the restaurant? Not surprisingly, the Bald Mountain Pizza with Italian sausage, pepperoni, roasted garlic, olives and red and green peppers. There are also tempting starters including smoked trout bruschetta, salads and an antipasto chop.
This weekend, I bee-lined for Bald Mountain Pizza with my favorite two ten-year-olds and my favorite 50-year-old for a night on the town. I was out of ideas for dinner at home and they were in the mood for some fun. We settled into a comfortable table in the low-key dining room and were quickly greeted with two plates of carrot sticks with ranch dipping sauce for the boys, the offer of a glass of wine or beer for the adults and a recommendation of mozzarella sticks for the table. Immediately, our friendly and professional server Aaron also asked if we would like to take advantage of the free movie offer so he could make sure we made the 6:30 p.m. showing.
Bald Mountain Pizza & Pasta is very family friendly, from carrots and ranch appetizers to coloring pages to keep the children busy
We did, indeed, want to catch the screening of Paddington so Aaron made sure we were served in a timely manner. After the mozzarella sticks disappeared, our entrees appeared in short order. My son ordered the regular size spaghetti and meatballs and was brought a large portion of steaming hot pasta with lots of homemade meatballs. It was a huge hit. His friend with a smaller appetite chose a child-size pepperoni pizza that turned out to be perfect as he finished the last bite and declared himself full (for now). My friend created a make-your-own personal size Hawaiian pizza that was very flavorful and tasty. I ordered the barbecue chicken pizza that was prepared with a spicy barbecue sauce, caramelized red onions, japalenos, cilantro and mushrooms. The 8” personal size was perfect, piping hot and had the right amount of kick. Bring on those jalapenos! I sipped a glass of Chardonnay with it and felt relaxed for the first time all week.
Our server Aaron knew how to keep the children and the parents relaxed and happy!
In under an hour, we enjoyed a filling, delicious meal and the bill did not give me sticker shock. After a brief stop at the Chocolate Foundry for some fudge (full disclosure – it's the boys’ favorite even though they could have enjoyed ice cream or sorbet at the restaurant) we walked across the lawn to the historic Opera House. There, we presented our vouchers for the screening of Paddington and found our seats. I have not been to a movie at the Opera House since they converted to Sony Digital Cinema and new state-of-the-art audio equipment. It was a very enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half and to catch a recent movie that we hadn’t had a chance to see. It was even more fun because we didn’t have to pay for a ticket.
Dinner at Bald Mountain Pizza & Pasta and a movie is a great option no matter whether you are just too tired to cook and entertain, or whether you spent the day skiing and riding and worked up an appetite. Accessible, affordable and appetizing, head over to the Sun Valley Village for a great evening.
A screening of a movie at the Opera House is the perfect cap to a great dinner, especially since admission is free with your meal at Bald Mountain Pizza & Pasta
