Clear your Calendar for the Sun Valley Film Festival

Film buffs unite! In just a few short weeks, the Sun Valley Film Festival, a celebration of all things celluloid, returns to town. From screenings of countless independents films, to coffee talks, to concerts and parties, not to mention some mega wattage star power, this is a Sun Valley week you don’t want to miss. The Festival runs from March 4 – 8 and passes and tickets are now on sale.

“Great things are happening at the Sun Valley Film Festival,” said Christopher Mullen, Marketing and Communications Director for the event. Sure to be a highlight of this year’s Festival is the inaugural presentation of the Lifetime Vision Award. The recipient will be the one and only Clint Eastwood, a four-time Academy Award® winner. The highly esteemed actor and director has been nominated for the highest honor in American films 11 times during a career that spans more than 50 years. His body of work includes: Unforgiven, Mystic River, and Million Dollar Baby, among many others. His most recent film, American Sniper, received a 2015 Academy Award® nomination for Best Picture. His longstanding connection with Sun Valley includes filming the 1985 western Pale Rider in the area and returning to the area for decades.

Many other exciting things are happening on the screen and on the stage. “The Screenwriters Lab is always extremely popular and this year the hosts, Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, promise to be entertaining to say the least,” Christopher said. “Not only are they writers, but they are also actors. They are hilarious.”

The Coffee Talks, a signature event of the Sun Valley Film Festival, will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings, the 6th, 7th and 8th of March at 10 a.m. They are free and open to the public.
This year’s Coffee Talk guests are the incomparable Bruce Dern and Bill Paxton. Bruce Dern is one of the most critically acclaimed actors of our time with credits that include The King of Marvin Gardens, The Great Gatsby, Coming Home, and Django Unchained among many others. In 2013, Dern won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival for Alexander Payne’s Nebraska.  He was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Actor for this film in 2014.

Bill Paxton has starred in films including Aliens, Twister, Titanic, Weird Science and Apollo 13.  He will be on hand for the Festival’s 20th anniversary Hollywood Heritage series screening of Apollo 13. Coffee talks with these two amazing actors will provide an insiders’ look at the movie making business and questions will be taken from the audience. Trevor Groth, Director of Programming at the Sundance Film Festival, will also be featured at a Coffee Talk.

But there is so much more! “The Future Filmmakers Forum has really taken on a life of its own,” Christopher said. “The Film Lab promises to be eye opening. And there are, of course, all the screenings to enjoy.”

New this year is a Party Pass, perfect for those with commitments during the day who want to be a part of the Festival experience. And a party it will be! “This pass brings in the amazing nightlife at the Festival,” Christopher explained. “Holders can enjoy live bands, lounge talks and parties.” Some of the bands you won’t want to miss this year are Brooklyn’s The London Souls at the Opening Party Thursday night and a highly anticipated concert from Jackson, Mississippi’s The Weeks at Saturday night’s Awards Bash. Individual tickets are not being sold for the concerts so the Party Pass is the way to go.

Movie screenings, talks, presentations and parties will be held up and down the valley, from the Liberty Theatre in Hailey to the Opera House in Sun Valley to the nexStage Theatre, Magic Lantern Cinemas and Whiskey Jacques in downtown Ketchum.

Venues up and down the Wood River Valley will host movies to make you think, feel and care

“One of the best things about the Sun Valley Film Festival is that there are so many ways to enjoy it,” Christopher said. “You can immerse yourself in this experience and spend five-days taking advantage of everything that is offered, or you can drop-in as your schedule and interests allow.”

See you at the movies!
