Summer Mountain Operations Updates

Trail Access Update – Olympic Area

Due to ongoing forest health work in the Olympic Area, access for hiking and uphill biking from River Run base area is currently limited to the Bald Mountain Trail. At this time, downhill bike access to River Run base area is not available. Riders will need to either: Download via the Gondola (operating Wednesday through Sunday), or exit via Warm Springs or Cold Springs Trails.

The Roundhouse is accessible for hikers via the Bald Mountain Trail and the Roundhouse Connector Trail.

Please note: Bike Patrol does not sweep or regularly patrol the Warm Springs and Cold Springs trails, as they are outside our managed boundary.

We expect these closures to remain in place through the week (7/21-7/27) and will reassess and provide updates for next week as needed. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Bald Mountain Stewardship Project

For the last six years, the National Forest Foundation and Sun Valley Resort have led a coalition of over 60 individuals and organizations—including the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and private landowners—to address declining forest health on Bald Mountain and surrounding areas.

2025 Restoration Work:

This summer's efforts will focus on forest health and fuel reduction in Olympic terrain, including:

  • Thinning approximately 100 acres to remove dead and downed trees, promote forest resilience, and open new gladed skiing terrain
  • Replanting native species
  • Removing noxious weeds
  • Installing MCH packets to deter insect infestations
What to Expect:

Visitors should anticipate closures on the River Run side of Bald Mountain this summer. For more information on on-going forest health work, visit our Sustainability page below.
